Both resistors and PTC thermistors have a very high time inertia, which creates a risk of pulse generation on the secondary side of the physical layer transformer and will damage Ethernet controllers. This is caused by a sudden current pulse that occurs when high potentials equalize between individual devices. This risk occurs when end devices (IP cameras) are installed on high poles, roofs or grounded metal structures.
